I was born in one of the islands in the Philippines.

When I was 9, my dad gathered our family and brought us to a vacant piece of land.

Like a great team captain, my dad gathered our family into a huddle and said, “Guin bakal ko ini nga duta para sa aton balay” – on this land, we will build our house.

“Let’s go!”

What we did...

Every day after school, my siblings and I helped mom and dad. I remember, Dad would cut down trees while my older siblings cleared the debris off the land.

Me? I was too young then to even use a hammer.

So, I became the designated... "errand boy!"

Dad would holler, “Lex, I need a hammer!”

I’d run around, find the hammer, and bring it back to dad, shouting, “Dad, here’s the hammer!”

What I did...

You know how kids enjoy building Lego blocks?

I was having a blast building a real house with my dad!

Six months later...

Dad gathered us into a huddle again.

This time, he said, “Kids, pack your things. We’re leaving the house we're renting and we're moving in to the house that we're building."

"Let’s go!”

That first night, I was lying down in my room when I noticed the moon. The moon was unusually big and bright. Then I realized I was looking through a hole in the wall.

My room had no window.

At that point, we’d only built the roof and walls of the house. We left cutouts on the walls in place for windows and doors. We moved in because mom and dad ran out of money.

I grew up in a house with no windows and no doors.

“No windows, no doors.”

What Mom and Dad did...

I also grew up watching mom and dad work hard.

Whatever they earned, they’d buy a window, then a door.

One day after school, my sister ran up, screaming with excitement, “Lex, look! My room has a window!”

Another day, I shouted, “Look, guys, we have a back door now!”

A year later, we celebrated the holidays with friends and family in our completed house.

I looked at my Dad, and he looked like the proudest man in our neighborhood.

Three months later...

I woke up in the middle of the night.

Mom was screaming, “Lex, wake up. Something’s wrong with dad!”

My Mom and my older siblings took dad to the hospital. I stayed home to watch my younger siblings.

Several hours later, they came back.

Mom walked up to me.

Hugged me tight.

Whispered...

“Lex, we no longer have dad. Daddy's gone.”

My dad was a corporate guy.

  • He reached the highest position in his office.

  • He directed multiple departments.

  • He was a hard worker.

  • He was overworked.

  • He was stressed.

  • He was 41.

My Dad died from a heart attack.

The day my dad died was the day I decided to design my career to have the most impact and influence. To reach the top… without dying from stress, overwork, or burnout.

That’s why I want you to grow your career and income twice as fast.
